About
Operation Shower is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that recognizes and honors the sacrifices military families make by producing and coordinating unit-wide baby showers and “showers in a box” for pregnant or expecting military families in a deployment or high stress situation. Operation Shower began in March 2007, when Lena Morrissey, looking for a way to give back to military families that were in a deployment situation, set out with family and friends to send a “shower in a box” to 4 military families who were expecting babies while the husband was deployed. The overwhelming support she received putting these boxes together and the messages of thanks she received from these moms left her with little doubt that this was something worth doing — over and over again! She joined with Kris Jackson, a friend from Clever Parents -a website to which Lena contributed, to hold the first unit-wide shower at Ft. Bragg, NC in June 2007. From that point forward, they made it official and Operation Shower was born!
As of June 2009, Lena and Kris and the Operation Shower team have, through the generous donations of individuals and corporate sponsors and volunteers, showered over 300 women. We have held 10 unit-wide showers on military bases across the country for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Operation Shower feels blessed and honored to be able to join with these women for a special celebration during what is otherwise an often stressful time. The showers provide wonderful items for the new babies and moms, and help bring the women together to celebrate with others in the same situation.
This blog is meant to be a behind-the scenes look at some of the “goings-on” at Operation Shower along with personal insights from the team. We hope to share as we go so others can learn from our struggles to keep a non-profit afloat!
